Additionally, another contributor to the growing industry is the development of virtual reality and cloud gaming. It makes the games more appealing to people with busy schedules and who are on the go. But now that they can walk down the street, or goof off at work and continue mobile gaming on their phones or computers is completely ingenious. This industry was still booming when this was the case. Users use to be tied down to consols or PCs that remained stationary in their homes. This makes a whole lot of sense when you think about the logistics. A huge contributor to this revenue is actually mobile gaming. In fact by 2025, the industry is expected to grow to a worth of $300 billion. This is not the first time I have heard about the extreme growth of the video game industry. I completely agree with your statements in this blog post and I find it super interesting. Although the video game industry is successful and has the potential to be used for good, it is important that we recognize how the drastic growth of this industry can affect our society and youth if these negative messages and themes are perpetuated. Video game violence is a very common theme in different games, and the effects of this violence are seen in the increase in hostility and aggression among users.
One of the dangers of a technology platform as large as the video game world is that it is so easy to spread these negative media messages and so easy for users to absorb and adopt these destructive mentalities. The overwhelming majority of video games spread negative media messages to users, including portraying violence and inhumanity as acceptable. Because of it’s large reach, it is a platform that has the potential to be used both positively and negatively. In one o my other classes, we discussed how widespread the video game industry is and how many users there are around the world.
